Simplicity in the Cistercian Tradition, December 3 at 9 am in the Sutherland Hall.
Cistercian monasticism began in 1098 as a reform of the Benedictine monastic tradition. One of the hallmarks of Cistercian monasteries is simplicity. Simplicity for Cistercian monks is not about austerity for its own sake; it is about creating space for God, leaving empty space in our lives to experience and recognize and reflect on the presence of God. Advent is a perfect time to think about whether our lives our too cluttered, too full, to welcome Jesus. In Rector’s Forum this Sunday, we will hear a brief overview of the history of Cistercian monasticism and its key features before launching into a discussion of what simplicity might look like in our own lives.
