EfM is a unique four-year program under the auspices of the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. EfM provides theological education for lay persons based upon small-group study and practice. Each week the group meets to discuss what it is reading: Year 1 students read the Old Testament; Year 2 students read the New Testament; Year 3 students will read church history; Year 4 students read Christian theology. The second half of the meeting is spent doing a Theological Reflection. Theological Reflection is an EfM practice that allows the students to probe a topic through the lenses of Christian tradition, culture, personal experience, and position or belief. The outcome of the Theological Reflection is an understanding of how the students might apply the learnings to their ministry and transformation. The group’s discussions are intellectually and spiritually challenging since they draw on the knowledge and experience of a group of mature Christian seekers.
